That's where they keep the pet/messenger birds, right? How do you get inside? That open space @ the bottom looks like a tunnel to me. Why is it not connected to anything?
No, not exactly: if people built dovecotes in the past, it was not for keeping messenger birds, but for collecting the droppings of the pigeons, which were a very good fertilizer (and, sometimes, the eggs or a young pigeon... for eating it!).
This dovecote was built on the ruins of a medival gate, the surrounding wall was destroyed but you can see some of its stones on the front. The shapes of the dovecotes were very various, some of them looking like towers ( [link] or [link] ), some of them buit on the top of pillars ( [link] ), independant or joined to a farm house( [link] or [link] : of course, they are often converted into a room, now!)
